Excerpt from the back of the book:_____________________
In a time of mistrust between settlers and Indians, one is born a half breed, not accepted by either camp. Yet though his world does not accept him, One has, and has destined him to show all men are brothers, no matter what color their skin is.

Excerpt from Chapter 1:_____________________________
The land was so alive in the springtime; exhilarating. He slung his bow over his back and took off at a sprint. Around trees, over fallen branches, through brambles. Nothing was too thick or large or barbed for him to get through, and he did not break his pace, though the thorns on the trees caught in his flesh a few times.
Cacti were scattered at random intervals, but he did not step on any. He ran across the flat ground, then down, as it sloped on the hill. The wind rushed past his face, causing him to throw out a whoop of delight. He was light as a feather, swift as an eagle, strong as a warrior’s horse.
Finally, he stopped, his breath as steady as when he started. He took a quick look around this new part of the forest. The trees stood a bit farther apart than those near the village. Silence reigned, as though even nature’s breath was bated.
The heat rose from the ground, made waves in the air. Drops of yellow sunlight spattered the ground all around him; some large, some only speckles. In stark contrast to this, the shadows that the light did not touch were dark, almost black. A whisper of wind brushed past him, stirring the trees from their present slumber.
He thought of his mother’s God; how she taught Benoni that He had created everything around him. Then he considered the belief of his tribe, that nature itself was God. As he stood in the quiet beauty of this forest, he could almost believe it existed of its own accord. Yet, ever since he learned a few years ago how his father had violated his mother against her will, he could believe nothing he said or taught.
He also remembered his mother’s words, that it was not what one did despite their beliefs that counted, but what one did because of their beliefs.
He moved his eyes, turning his mind from such thoughts. A single chipmunk scurried up the trunk of a nearby tree. The wind rustled the leaves slowly, almost caressing them.
A slight, unnatural sound turned his attention from nature, and he focused on his hearing. He did not move, except to very slowly take his bow from his back and fit an arrow onto the string. The slightest sound of rustling leaves caused him to turn, bringing his bow up as he did, and aimed directly at the source of the noise.
A young man no more than a few years older than he himself stood about twenty-five paces away, a molded shape of metal held in his hand. Benoni realized this must be a gun. It was not like those he had seen before. This one was much shorter, and fit into one hand.
The hat on the young man’s head was the color of sand in the bright sun and was a curved shape. He had seen a hat like it in one of his mother’s drawings, and she had called the man wearing it a cowboy.
The young man’s face showed no malice, only curiosity. He looked as though he wanted to speak, but paused for a long moment. Benoni realized that the young man would assume he did not know the language of English.
Without lowering the bow or his gaze, Benoni spoke first.
“What is your name?”
